I think in systems. Bottom up. That's how my brain works.
Give me an interface and I'll ask what produces it. Give me a broken workflow and I'll ask what the organization is optimizing for. Twenty-plus years of design work later, that process has a track record.
The shape of the career
I started in game consoles and 3D interfaces at Infinium Labs, then led design teams at RealNetworks, where a full redesign of the GameHouse direct-to-consumer business took it from $10M to $40M in revenue and I managed six designers while rebuilding the creative process from scratch. Then I built world-space game UI for Forza Motorsport 4 at Microsoft's Turn 10 Studios.
Then Amazon, for eight years, designing and evangelizing the Amazon Payment Experience (APX). One designer at the start, thousands of independent payment experiences to unify, and no authority to force anyone to adopt anything. The system we built, with componentized widgets, federated development, and a design-review bar-raiser program, was voluntarily adopted by more than 99% of global Amazon payments traffic. Adoption can't be mandated into existence. You have to architect the conditions where adopting is the easy choice.
From 2019 to 2023 I founded and ran The Wandering Hedonist, a literary food-and-travel publication startup (brand, website, editorial voice, and photography system), produced while traveling continuously across dozens of countries over 3+ years. It reached its self-supporting goal; the content is now becoming a 490-page coffee table book.
Since 2024 I've been Lead UX Designer at Prime Factors, reconceptualizing a 40-year-old bank-card security product as it moves from a Windows client to the web: deep legacy analysis, an entirely new interaction paradigm, new pattern and visual libraries, and guidance for the UI technology being built to support it. Alongside that, I design and ship AI-native products, complete, functional systems built by directing AI end to end.
Where I do my best work
Open-ended, ambiguous, high-complexity problem spaces with real autonomy. Engaged team members to collaborate with and to challenge me. Mapping a system nobody fully understands, finding the architecture underneath, designing something other teams choose to build on. That requires curiosity and exploration. I do well in these spaces. Particularly where vision and insight are key.

Off the clock
My personal hobbies all contain a mix of technology and creativity. I find I need both to keep my mind interested. Cooking, from molecular to traditional. Organic gardening. Two novels written, a work of philosophy in progress. Conceptual and environmental gallery installation. Travel, food, studio, and concept photography. Percussion and misfit instruments like the saw.
The Wandering Hedonist (briefly)
I founded and ran a literary food-and-travel publication startup (brand, site, photography system, editorial voice) and then produced it for three years across dozens of countries. The goal was to become self-supporting, which was achieved, and the content created is now being made into a 490-page coffee table book. The lens was to use local traditional cuisine to see the underlying culture and, where possible, to contrast those origins with highly refined versions by Michelin-quality chefs, all in a literary voice with a non-clickbait aesthetic. The twist: halfway through, Covid hit the world scene, and I documented how the project survived it, and how it came back once travel returned.
